I totally agree with what you're saying. I wish more people felt this way and took the time to express themselves. Keep up the great work.

I stumbled upon Runtime instantiation when i was mucking around with my synergyFLEX framework. In my travels, i found that while the compiler did take over the burden of parsing the MXML and converting it to swf binary, the overall "instantiation" process, like most other languages, happens still at runtime. So essentially, if you can provide the necessary references for the runtime creation (ie making sure classes are embedded within the SWF) it can be done so with minimal effort and resources.

The only downside as you hinted at, is the parsing of XML, and its validation overall. Thats where things could get murkey as the great part about the compiler is it not only checks syntax but also semantics.

That being said, with the new DisplayList API, you could easily create your own XML vocab, which you then read and it joins parts together at runtime. As with the new DisplayList API, you have the added ability of re-parenting (a feature much sort after in the pre-FLEX 2.0 flash development).

FLEX 2.0 offers a lot more power in terms of runtime evaluation, especially with the new E4X powers (making XML parsing easier).

Content Management Systems today mostly comprise of clunky runtime creation of XHTML, but this concept could easily translate into FLEX 2.0 / FLASH ....

Kevin,

Something that I am struggling with is creating a grouping of radio buttons. Assuming that I have a similar layout of XML that builds the ComboBox, can you give me a hint about wrapping them in an HBox?

Thanks,
Jeff
